Latin II

Salve!  Welcome to Latin II and the 2006-2007 school year!

Official Course Description

Students in Latin II continue their study of Latin vocabulary and grammar as well as of classical civilization, ancient history, and mythology.  Latin II introduces students to authentic Latin texts.  (Successful completion of this class fulfills the two years of foreign language currently required by many colleges and universities.  Students should consult their institution of higher learning for specific requirements.)

What This Means for You

We will continue using the Ecce Romani series as our primary means to learn additional vocabulary and grammatical concepts and to review previous learning.  Nonetheless, we may make use of other materials as time, interest, and need allow.  At the end of the year you will have covered the majority of the standard basic grammatical topics that will prepare you for successful study at Marquette or in a post-secondary setting.  Our major objective for the year will be to improve our ability to read and translate Latin.  Although we will share in the further adventures of first-century AD Romans, we will also begin to read original Roman literature.  A reliable Latin dictionary would be a sound investment, but is not mandatory for this course.

Your Success in Class

Good study skills, regular attendance, and strong self-motivation remain key components of your success in Latin II.  Complete all daily assignments, maintain up-to-date notes, participate actively in class, review frequently, and seek assistance whenever you need it.  Above all, make sure you learn the assigned vocabulary and grammar concepts (the endings!) covered in class.  Take advantage of my webpages for Ecce Romani: http://www.tabney.com/ecce1.html and

http://www.tabney.com/ecce2.html, the world’s largest sites for our texts.  There are new offerings all the time to help you practice principal parts, spelling, definitions, forms of verbs, nouns, and pronouns, and cultural materials.
